Carrara Marble

Carrara Marble

The marble caves unfold on the side of wild and steep slopes, where man has been extracting white blocks of stone for millenniums.
Here man has found raw material for his art: architectural and artistic works adorn squares, realms and private construction worldwide.

This tour will introduce you to this fascinating world of ancient manual work and modern technologies, where thanks to the marble’s extraction and production, we enter in the history of this territory and its population. Not only you’ll discover the caves and its history but also the thousand-year old excavators’ hamlets.
Gem’s in Tuscany propose you a fantastic Jeep 4x4 excursion in the marble basin of the Apuan Alps, discovering the precious Carrara marbles, which have been used also by Michelangelo for his works of art, many of which are the most important ones in the world.

Then we’ll go on to our next step of the tour: Pietrasanta.
Pietrasanta is an artistic Versiliese town and open-air museum. Here you’ll be able to see the works of art of the most famous artists, both in the town streets and in the art galleries. This town is connected to the marble industry/manufactory that boasts a centennial tradition here in Pietrasanta. So much that both Fernando Botero and Igor Mitoraj bought a house here.
